There’s nothing like giving your students control over their learning. Edutopia has a great article titled “Boosting High School Students’ Sense of Agency and Motivation” by Mary Davenport discussing how “voice and choice in the classroom can build ” students “desire to learn and do well academically.” I’ve linked there article here.
As many of you know Karen and Kim facilitated a great course on The Power of Student Agency which I hope to offer this summer. A description of the course follows:
This course is designed to help educators create an environment where students can be creative and self-directed learners. If we want students to thrive, we need to empower them with the tools to become architects of their own learning. This course aims to walk teachers through the process of designing student-centered inquiry lessons to create learning experiences that leverage student curiosity, encourages exploration, and allows the members of a learning community to learn with and from each other. There will be a strong emphasis on building student agency through choice and voice. Participants will explore the various purposes of utilizing choice, such as encouraging retrieval practice and providing students agency in terms of how they demonstrate their learning. Each module includes resources, templates, and action items designed to encourage teachers to take what they are learning and create resources and lessons they can use with students immediately.
Have a terrific summer!!
